After Port Royal - Champlain Continues

THE FOUNDING OF NEW FRANCE
(Adapted from Page 226-227 of your textbook)
Port Royal was not a great success and eventually de Monts lost his trading monopoly. However, Champlain was still convinced that Canada could be profitable for the French. The year is 1608, he went up the St. Lawrence river to what is now Quebec City. He established a post - a habitation - at Quebec and made friends with the Algonkians and Motagnais against the Iroquois. Quebec was chosen because it was almost an impregnable natural fort. In return, they agreed to not trade any furs with the English. Champlain helped the Algonkians win several battles againsy the Iroquois because the French owned firearms.
